Dr. Brian Barkemeyer was recently honored with the Master Pediatrician Award by the Louisiana Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The local chapter describes a master pediatrician as a superb clinician with at least 20 years of practice who has contributed to the health and welfare of children in Louisiana through direct patient care and child advocacy, while educating and serving as an outstanding role model to students and young physicians.

“Dr. Barkemeyer developed the premier neonatology program in the state, with excellence in clinical service, education and scholarly activity. He is frequently identified as the faculty member who inspired individuals to enter the field of pediatrics,” said Dr. Raymond Watts, chair of the department of pediatrics.

Dr. Barkemeyer is a New Orleans native who completed his undergraduate, medical school, residency, and fellowship training at LSU and LSU SOM. He has been a faculty member since 1991 and a full professor since 2008.

Dr. Watts added, “Dr. Barkemeyer is a renowned pediatric neonatologist for the pediatric community across the region. He has been a tireless leader and advocate for the causes of children and the advancement of pediatrics.”

“The common thread of all his causes is his heartfelt determination to improve the health of Louisiana children,” he continued. “He epitomizes the academic triad of excellence in clinical care, research, and education, and he champions the cause of patient advocacy.”
